Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan is in talks with Marvel and may soon be the latest Hollywood star to join the cast of "The Eternals." sources tell Variety.
Chan would join previously announced cast members Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek and Kumail Nanjiani. Chan made her MCU debut earlier this year, playing Kree villain Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel. It's still unknown if she will be playing the same role in The Eternals, but sources have indicated that her part in the movie would be a completely different role. While this wouldn't be the first time an actor has played multiple roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe(Alfre Woodard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kennet Choi and Clancy Brown for example) it would be a first that a high-profile example of an actor switching from one character to another. Given Chan's success in Crazy Rich Asians and obvious star power, continuity may not be Marvel's biggest concern
Marvel refused to comment on the matter for now.
Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, the comic book is set millions of years in the past, when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans to create super-powered individuals known as the Eternals, along with the villainous Deviants. The two groups battled each other throughout history. The Eternals also warred with Greek, Roman and Norse deities before leaving Earth to explore the stars.
The Eternals is set to hit theaters in November 6, 2020, and It will mark the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chloe Zhao will be directing the superhero film from a script by Matther and Ryan Firpo. Produced by Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feigi.
Outside of “Captain Marvel,” Chan was a scene-stealer in Warner Bros.’ breakout hit “Crazy Rich Asians.” She was also seen in the Focus drama “Mary Queen of Scots” with Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie.
