According to Yahoo News, Detective Pikachu has made $436 million globally, making it the most financially successful video game movie of all time. It has now overtaken Warcraft, which held the record for the highest grossing movie based on a game.
Over this past weekend, the five remaining territories where the film is still playing, Norway, New Zealand, Slovenia, Columbia and Portugal have added $6,994 to it's total, which when combined with the films US and global box office figures pushes it past Warcraft's record of $430.1 million.
Detective Pikachu has also beat out last year's Rampage movie, which got a huge boost from its star Dwayne Johnson. The film finished out with $428 million and now sees itself on the third spot.
Given the movie's critical and commercial success, it won't come to us as a surprise if Legendary decides to move forward with a sequel to Detective Pikachu.
So is the video game movie curse broken? it's far too early to say.But with the Detective Pikachu's success, the future seems promising.
