According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is currently in talks with Harry Styles to be part of The Little Mermaid live-action cast. The former One Direction singer is set to play Prince Eric, the love interest of Ariel, played by singer-actor Halle Bailey.
Styles would be another singer to join the cast after Bailey and would further strengthen the upcoming live-action film's musical bonafides. Director Rob Marshall has a background in musicals as well, directing movies like Chicago, Into the Woods, and Mary Poppins Returns. The casting of Styles and Bailey show the studio’s intent of making the music a central component of the remake. Interestingly, the character of Eric performed no songs in the 1989 animated original. That was remedied, however, in the 2000s Broadway musical, with Eric now performing several numbers, including two solos.
Right now, Bailey is the only offical member announced for the Little Mermaid. But reports state that actors like Jacob Tremblay, Melissa McCarthy and Awkwafina are all in talks to join the live-action movie. Meanwhile Terry Crews is petitioning Disney himself for the role of King Triton.
The Little Mermaid's production is set to begin in early 2020. following films like The Lion King, Aladdin and the upcoming Mulan.
