Considered one of the most-tightly-designed rougelike platform game, it seems like Spelunky 2 won't make its previously scheduled 2019 release date. Mossmouth Developer Derek Yu stated he "doesn't think we're going to release Spelunky 2 this year," as the "density and detail of the game is demanding more time."
Yu explained on a post on Twitter saying "development is still going well and we're not far off target, but Spelunky 2 just needs more time to live up to the much beloved original."
Hey, Spelunky fans! Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year. Development is still going well and we're not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time.

Yu goes on to describe the improvements being made since the game's trailer last August. Yu said that Mossmouth and Blitworks have “been adding more detail, as well as increasing the contrast to make existing details pop," he also adds that the developers realize the silence from their end doesn't look great, but they assure fans that as soon as Spelunky 2 has a realease date, they'll make sure that everyone knows.
While Yu did not commit to a 2020 release date, the producer did say that they are fairly close.
Spelunky 2 was announced at Paris Games Week in 2017. in 2018, the developer penciled in a 2019 release date for Playstation 4 and Windows PC via Steam.
