The Lion King 2019 is now the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, though it may not look like a conventional animated film.
The 2019 film is a “photorealistic” computer-animated remake of the 1994 classic so technically it falls within the animation class. This weekend, The Lion King succeeded to beat Incredibles 2 and frozen worldwide, dethroning Frozen becoming the highest grossing animated film ever.
The Lion King (as of 8/11/19) Worldwide: $1,334,603,826
Frozen Worldwide gross: $1,276,480,335
Incredibles 2 at $1.242 billion, Minions at $1.15 billion, then Toy Story 3, Despicable Me 3, Finding Dory, and Zootopia is behind Frozen. It's pretty impressive knowing that The Lion King is not yet done and considering the bad reviews. The film made $473.1 million at the domestic box office and $861.5 million globally and it will still keep growing.
The Lion King is still at the top despite critics saying that it is "Live-Action" and not "Animated," unseating the remake of Beauty and the Beast.
Beauty and the Beast Worldwide: $1,263,521,126
Box Office Mojo is calling The Lion King an animated movie and they also list the 2019 Lion King in the live-action remake categories, trying Disney to get every possible title.
